INFORMATION about
the INGREDIENTS in VITASAGE
and YOUR SKIN
A good moisturizer contains emollients, water-binding agents
sometimes called humectants (humectants are ingredients that attract
water to the skin to help keep it there), soothing or anti-irritant
type ingredients, and antioxidants.
The skin is the largest organ of the body
and it needs protection to stay healthy and to counteract prematurely
aging skin. Specific vitamins provide protection against such
harmful influences if supplied to the body orally and through
external applications.
- Emollients are ingredients such as lanolin, which
is probably the only ingredient that is most like our own skin's
oil. They are lubricating ingredients that are superlative for
dry skin. They provide dry skin with the one thing it is missing
-- lubrication -- in the form of ingredients that resemble the
skin's own oil production. Lanolin is a superior emollient
and lubricant for dry skin.
- Antioxidants are a fascinating part of a moisturizing formula.
They seem to have the ability to keep air off the skin and prevent
a certain amount of solar degeneration of the skin. All that
is incredibly beneficial for cell turnover, healing and reducing
dehydration. Such antioxidants are vitamin A (retinyl
palmitate and retinol), vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate
and magnesium ascorbyl palmitate) and vitamin E (tocopherol).
All of these combined create a moisturizer that is considered
best for the skin.
- A water binding agent is a general term used to refer to
ingredients that keep water in the skin. A humectant, glycerin,
attracts water to the skin and helps deliver other ingredients
to the skin.
- Anti-irritants are added to skin care formulations to help
soothe the skin, such as chamomile extract. An extra added
feature chamomile is that its essence is relaxing.
- Oils in general, whether plant, animal, or mineral, help
keep water in the skin. If your skin is dry, choose a product
that contains one or more oils, such as almond and olive
oils. These two oils are also excellent emollients. Almond
oil carries nutrients to the skin. Ancient civilizations
used olive oil to help heal wounds. Today, it is considered
a good remedy for skin problems and an effective moisturizer.
- Honey is valued for its healing properties. A thin
coat of honey can be applied to the skin to disinfect and heal
minor skin wounds and chapped lips. It contains a germ killing
substance called inhibine which helps prevent infections.
